Motley West is a quick game

wh you’ll try and arrest outlaws

faster than your opponents,

without making any mistake!








<Components>



- 72 cards


- 45 Outlaw cards


- 27 Bounty cards


- 1 Sheriff Badge


- 18 fame tokens








<Set Up>



Shuffle all 72 cards and deal them equally

to each player, face down.

Each player places their stack of cards

in front of them and gains 3 Fame Tokens.

Place the Sheriff Badge in the middle of the table.

The last player to see a Western movie will be the first player.








<Game Progress>



Players take turns playing the top card

from their stacks in a clockwise rotation.

On your turn, open the top card of your deck

and place it next to your stack with facing up.

Then, cover it with your hand.

The next players plays, and so on,

until someone yells “Freeze!’”.


Basic Rule

During the game, you can only use

one hand to do your actions

(draw a card, cover a card,

hit the Sheriff badge, etc.).


Freeze!

If you notice that a player

revealed an Outlaw that matches

a Bounty Card (or vice-versa),

you may instantly yell “Freeze!”

and hit the Sheriff Badge to pause the game.

When you say Freeze!,

all other players have to stop playing 

with keeping their hand on

the last card that they played.

From now on, it's up to you to show

which players had matching cards.

You must point to the player

that has a Bounty Card in front of them,

and to the player that has a matching

Outlaw Card in front of them

(do so with both forefingers,

as pointing two ol’ revolvers).

Both players take off their hand

to check whether you were right.


Successful Arrest

The arrest is successful 

if the hat or the scarf of the Outlaw

matches the Bounty Card.

Instantly take not only the two cards as a reward,

but also any previously discarded Fame Token.


Failed Arrest

If the hat or the scarf of the Outlaw

does not match the Bounty Card,

then you put an blameless in jail!

Instantly discard a Fame Token

(place it next to the Sheriff Badge).

The next player that successfully arrests

an Outlaw will also get any formerly

discarded Fame Token.

The player to the left of the last player

to reveal a card resumes the game 

after an arrest (successful or failed).


Armed Outlaws

Some outlaws have a gun,

and catching them won’t be that easy.

You cannot arrest an armed Outlaw

even if their hat or scarf matches the Bounty Card.

To arrest an armed Outlaw,

you need to find the Bounty Card

that shows a gun.

If you point to a normal Bounty Card

and an armed Outlaw by mistake,

then you discard one Fame Token.


Chain Reaction

When you gain cards as reward,

you will show the cards that were below them

(played from former turns).

If some of these cards match,

any player (including you)

may hit the Sheriff Badge and yell Freeze!

again to arrest another Outlaw.

Keep your eyes on the game at all times!


If several players hit the Sheriff Badge,

only the first one has a chance

to arrest an Outlaw.

A player may yell Freeze!

even when they are out of cards.








<How to Finish the Game>



Once all players have played all of their cards,

the game is over.

Tally your points as follows :


- Bounty Cards 

(2 points for a 2,000$ reward,

 3 points for a 3,000$ reward, etc.)


- Outlaw Cards (1 point each)


- Fame Tokens (2 points each)


The player who has highest points wins

and becomes the new Sheriff in town.
